Their records favour the weight of a groove and the interplay between two voices over unnecessary musical clutter.

Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith create momentum through the interaction of two distinct voices, with a relaxed surface that still depends on exact rhythmic placement. Back in Business brings that partnership into a later setting while retaining the importance of funk-rooted production. The album is rewarding for listeners who value the shared identity of a rap duo, where a handover between MCs becomes part of the arrangement.

Catalogue highlights

Back in Business marks a reunion chapter, reconnecting the duo’s chemistry with a later moment in East Coast rap.

The paired voices create much of the character: different phrasing and a shared sense of timing can give a familiar beat the feel of a continuing conversation.

Back In Business: Explore the vinyl presentation of this recording, keeping the programme and its physical presentation together.

Why collect EPMD?

The full programme gives the writing a wider setting, connecting changes of delivery, beat and perspective rather than separating a memorable verse from the musical world built around it. Vinyl gives the sleeve artwork and playing sequence a tangible place in a music collection. The visual design and the moment of placing a record on the turntable become part of returning to the music.
